VACANCY: Research Group Leader "Economies of Strong Asymmetrical Dependencies" (Bonn: Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies, DEADLINE 15 SEP 2026))

Description:

The Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS) is looking to fill the following position with effect from 1 January 2027, on a fixed-term contract until 31 December 2032: Research Group Leader for the Research Area B: Economies of SAD

"Economies of SAD" - Research Group Leader

The BCDSS, a German Research Council-funded “Cluster of Excellence”, offers excellent opportunities for inter-disciplinary and comparative research of different forms of Strong Asymmetrical Dependencies (SADs) across time periods and world regions. During its first phase (2019–2025), the BCDSS successfully developed the concept of SAD as a comprehensive analytical framework to understand how power imbalances have been shaped in the past, and continue to influence, societies around the world today.

In its second funding phase (2026–2032), the BCDSS will investigate the underlying causes and mechanisms that contribute to the persistence of SADs across historical and contemporary contexts. We aim to anchor Historically Informed Dependency Studies (HIDS) as a key interdisciplinary field in the humanities, encouraging scholars across the humanities and social sciences to systematically integrate the analysis of SADs into the study of social, economic, and cultural phenomena.

Our research focuses on five Research Areas:
- Transitions and Transformations of SADs,
- Economies of SADs,
- Power – Violence – Trauma,
- Cultural Heritage – Transitional Justice – Memory Cultures,
- Alternative Archives and Life Writing.

The successful candidate will lead a Research Group in the BCDSS’ Research Area B “Economies of SAD”, design and conduct independent projects on the history of dependency that closely relate to Research Area B’s re- search goals. Topics can be of a wide variety – from micro studies to wide scale approaches, in any historical period or geographical region. A Research Group at the BCDSS is an independent research unit led by an early- career researcher to pursue an original research agenda while supervising a small team of researchers. The successful candidate will recruit two doctoral researchers for the research group and collaborate closely with colleagues from the BCDSS, in particular the cluster professor for Economic Anthropology. Furthermore, the successful candidate will be part of the interdisciplinary and international research community.

Your responsibilities:
- Developing the research profile of the Research Group on the relationship between coercive exclusion, economic behaviour, and the broader social, cultural, and normative contexts in which they are embedded from a historical perspective,
- Recruiting and supervising two doctoral researchers,
- Providing academic leadership and strategic development of the Research Group,
- Conducting an independent research project leading to a second monograph or equivalent work,
- Developing innovative theoretical and methodological approaches to analyse SAD contextualizing their economic entanglements,
- Organizing and contributing to international workshops, seminars, and conferences,
- Building national and international research networks.

We offer:
- The opportunity to establish and lead an independent Research Group, including the recruitment and supervision of two doctoral researchers,
- Membership in the interdisciplinary and international research environment of the Bonn Center for - Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS),
- An open, collaborative, and innovative research culture that encourages interdisciplinary exchange,
Mentoring by two senior professors and comprehensive opportunities for professional and leadership development,
- Excellent institutional support for independent research, career development, families, and equal opportunities,
- Many options available for university sports,
- Excellent access by public transport thanks to Bonn’s central location as well as the opportunity to take advantage of low-cost parking,
- Flexible working hours and the ability to work from home,
- Remuneration in accordance with TV-L pay grade 14.

Your profile:
- At least three years of postdoctoral experience and an excellent academic track record in one or more of the following fields: History, Archaeology, Law, Theology,
- Publications relevant to the BCDSS research agenda in general and Research Area B in particular,
- Native or near-native proficiency in English,
- A strong interest in advancing research on HIDS from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective,
- Demonstrated ability to develop innovative research questions and engage with methodological and epistemological challenges
- Experience in collaborative and interdisciplinary research.

Your application needs to include:
- Cover letter stating your motivation to work at the BCDSS (max. 1800 characters including spaces),

Postdoctoral Researcher (Specified Purpose Contract)

Maynooth University, National University of Ireland Maynooth - Department of History

Location:Maynooth - Ireland
Salary:€47,273 to €47,880 or £41,117.87 to £41,645.83 (converted salary*) per annum (2 points)
Hours:Full Time
Contract Type:Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On:21st August 2026
Closes:11th October 2026
Job Ref:043683

The role

Maynooth University is committed to a strategy in which the primary University goals of excellent research and scholarship and outstanding education are interlinked and equally valued.

We are seeking an excellent scholar to join a project team led by Prof. Raul Cârstocea, who has been awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant for a project entitled Insurgent Temporalities: Fascism as a Global Anti-Universalist Project (INTEMPO). The postdoctoral researcher will be part of a team undertaking a novel analysis of fascism during the interwar period and the Second World War, understood as a global phenomenon. They will engage in archival research, co-organise the activities of the project and contribute to the publications ensuing from them, and co-lead with the PI one of the work packages of the project, as detailed below. They will have the opportunity to develop their research, both individually and as part of a team of ambitious scholars.

INTEMPO

Insurgent Temporalities: Fascism as a Global Anti-Universalist Project (INTEMPO) is funded by the European Research Council (ERC), as part of the ERC Consolidator Grant 2024 scheme of Horizon Europe, grant number no. 101170033. Led by Prof. Raul Cârstocea (Principal Investigator), the project investigates the global spread of fascism during the interwar period, particularly with a view to the transnational connections established by fascist movements and regimes. INTEMPO hypothesises that, despite their national specificities, fascist movements and regimes around the world recognised their commonalities and drew inspiration from, as well as engaged with, like-minded activists abroad. It argues that, while the significant differences between fascist organisations were a consequence of different national pasts in diverse contexts, fascists shared a common vision of a future ‘New Order’ that allowed them to see themselves as part of a European or, indeed, global fascist moment. This hypothesis will be tested against a number of case studies of fascist movements, within and outside of Europe, through archive-based research into their ideology and practices.

PHD STUDENTSHIP: Early women solicitors in England and Wales 1919-1939 (Lady Cruickshank Studentship) [DEADLINE 3 MARCH 2025]

Based in the Department of Law at Queen Mary University of London, the Lady Cruickshank studentship is valued at £25 000 per annum for three fulltime equivalent years, covering:

  • Annual tuition fees for a Home or International student (for 2024-25 these were £4,786 for full-time Home students, and £23,050 for full-time International students.  The fee rate for future years to be confirmed)); and
  • The remainder to be paid to the student as a tax-free stipend for your living (in regular instalments) or research (as a lump sum) costs.

About this project

In 2016 Elizabeth Cruickshank published a paper entitled “’Follow the Money’: the first women who qualified as solicitors 1922-1930”.  A central argument of “Follow the Money” was that women’s ability to practice law in the first two decades after the enactment of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 was primarily facilitated by family connections, in particular, by solicitor fathers seeking to replace their deceased soldier sons in the family law firm.

This studentship picks up the theme of “Follow the Money” Using previous research undertaken by Lady Cruickshank and the records of the Association of Women Solicitors, the studentship will facilitate the writing of a PhD thesis which explores Lady Cruickshank’s ideas.  The PhD awardee will work with supervisors to define the scope, research questions, and research methods for the doctoral project.

It is envisaged that the research will include an examination of the following questions:

  • To what extent and in what ways was the solicitors’ profession affected by World War One?
  • What was the public and professional discourse surrounding the admission of women to the legal profession?
  • What was the position of women who qualified as solicitors between 1922-1939?
  1.   How many qualified? What can be said about them as individuals and as a group?
  2.   Of those who qualified, how many were able to practice as lawyers? What were the obstacles facing aspiring women solicitors?
  3.   How many trained and/or were employed in a firm to which they had family connections? Of those who trained and/or fund employment elsewhere
  4.   How did this phenomenon affect the development of their careers and those of other women who did not or could not avail themselves of this pathway into the profession? For example, did      it curtail their professional development? Were they able to continue with feminist activism (where relevant)?
  5.   To what extent did women work as individuals or did they make use of informal or formal associations? To what extent did they make a difference to either the numbers or the experiences of    early women solicitors?
  • What barriers did women seeking to become lawyers during this period face?

Location:                 Tilburg
Contract size:                 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week)
Full-time gross monthly salary:    €4,492 – €6,148
Contract duration:             24 months
Desired starting date:             1 February 2025

Are you a PhD graduate in (legal) history with a passion for archival research? Then we are looking for you!

Tilburg University is hiring a postdoctoral researcher in legal history for the project ‘Multilevel Governance in Late Medieval and Early Modern Cities of Commerce’. The project consists of two major work packages: ‘Professionals and the People’ and ‘The Rhine as Legal Entity? Exploring Multilevel Governance and Intercity Relations in the 16th-century Wine Trades across the Rhine Region.’ As part of the second work package, you will conduct research on regulations relevant to the wine trade in several German cities along the Rhine. You will join a team of enthusiastic (legal) historians who are studying various aspects of urban institutions in the late medieval and early modern periods.

Your position
As postdoctoral researcher, you will conduct archival and literature research within the aforementioned project. Together with the principal investigators, Dr. Marco in ’t Veld (wp 2) and Dr. Maurits den Hollander (wp 1), you will dive into the history of the wine trade in cities such as Wesel, Cologne, Bonn, Koblenz, Mainz, and/or Worms. What expectations did wine merchants have of the urban institutions? Did cities meet these expectations? And if so, how exactly? Did cities collaborate with each other, or did they rather compete?

You will inventorize the available archival material in the relevant cities and produce academic publications, both independently and in collaboration with the principal investigators, to report the research findings. You will also be co-responsible for organizing an international scientific conference. There is ample opportunity to contribute your own ideas and to take initiatives. This way, we develop the project and shape it further collectively. At your request, opportunities to gain teaching experience can be explored. This position allows you to take the next step in your academic career.

The project team
The project team consists of two principal investigators and two postdoctoral researchers, and is embedded in the theme ‘Urban Constitutionalism’ of the faculty’s research program ‘Global Law and Governance’. Our department has approximately twelve legal historians. Many of them work on closely related topics, for instance, as part of the ERC-project CaPANES, which investigates the economic sovereignty of several medieval and early modern cities.

To maintain a lively and active community, it is important that we see each other regularly and maintain strong connections. The project team meets at least once a month to exchange literature and research findings. Additionally, you will also have informal and other organized meetings with colleagues. There is ample opportunity to work independently. As a project team, we are present on our beautiful, green campus in Tilburg about two days a week. On other days, you can also work from home. The department regularly organizes team-building and social events, allowing you to get to know colleagues from other specializations better and to feel quickly at home within the Department of Public Law and Governance.

Your profile
Tilburg University is curious about how you can contribute to our research, education, impact, and the team you will be joining. Therefore, we would like to get the best possible picture of your knowledge, skills, and personality. Below you will find a number of qualifications that we consider important for the position.

•    You have written a (legal) historical dissertation on a related medieval or early modern topic.
•    You have demonstrable experience in independently conducting archival research with handwritten sources from this period.
•    You are interested in the institutional, economic, and legal history of the relevant period.
•    You possess excellent oral and written communication skills, preferably evidenced by relevant academic publications and conference contributions.
•    You have an excellent proficiency of the English and German language, both spoken and written. Proficiency in Dutch and/or Latin is a plus.

Personal competencies:

•    You demonstrate scientific integrity and personal leadership, take responsibility for your work and career, and have good self-awareness.
•    You have team spirit. You feel part of a team and express this through collaboration, sharing knowledge and experience, and contributing to an open and inclusive work environment.
