Your position

As a lecturer, you may be involved in several degree programmes within the Department of Public Law & Governance (PLG), including the bachelor's programmes in Global Law and Liberal Arts and Sciences. Primarily, however, you will deliver engaging lectures and tutorials, develop and assess assignments and examinations in courses throughout the Global Law programme, particularly in the areas of legal theory, legal history and international law. In addition, you will supervise students in their academic development and contribute to a stimulating learning environment. A broad ability and willingness to teach across a range of courses within the public-law related aspects of Global Law is appreciated.

 

Within PLG, you will work closely with course coordinators and fellow lecturers in a collegial and international environment where teamwork and the exchange of ideas are highly valued. You will have the opportunity to contribute within a team to the further development of the curriculum.

The Faculty of Canon Law has a strong national and international reputation in teaching, research, and scientific services in the field of Canon Law and aims for leadership in each of these activities at the national, European, international and ecclesiastical levels.

The Faculty of Canon Law currently has more than 120 students from the five continents. Based on its extensive research expertise, teaching is offered in Dutch and English, both at master's and advanced master's level.

The Faculty distinguishes itself by emphasizing the ecclesiastical and Church-political role of Canon Law. Well-formed canon lawyers with a solid legal basis are vital for the Church and for the dialogue between the Church and society at a time of increasing secularization, religious fundamentalism and sometimes religiously legitimized violence. The Faculty of Canon Law has, based on its intrinsic mission and services, an important task and responsibility in this as the only Faculty in the world where people are trained in this discipline in Dutch and as one of the four in the world where this is possible in English. This requires sufficient analytical skills and originality in research and teaching, as well as attention to the juridical, the theological and philosophical foundations of Canon Law.

Research

The candidate strives for excellence in research. The candidate is able to develop and implement a broad research programme which is aligned with and complements the existing research programmes and the profile of the Faculty of Canon Law and which has a strong international dimension and outreach.
The candidate is expected to:

• conduct independent research on an international forum, build an international competitive research programme and strive for excellent scientific results;
• have a strong methodological research profile and be open for interdisciplinary research;
• promote national and international research cooperation;
• attract external funds for research;
• (co)supervises master’s and PhD students. 

Teaching

Teaching assignments will include the education in Dutch and English in Canon Law. As a full member of the Faculty, the teaching assignments will be related to the research domain as much as possible, while members of the academic staff are also expected to contribute more broadly to the Faculty’s teaching portfolio. Furthermore, the candidate will organize seminars for smaller groups, provide individual supervision of master’s theses and reserve sufficient time for the supervision of PhD students. 

Service

Service provision includes both internal service, such as service to the university or the Faculty and participation in councils and/or academic activities, as well as external service, i.e. service to the Church, to society or to the professional field in a broader sense.

Profile

You hold a doctoral degree in Canon Law with dissertation (JCD). An additional master's degree in law and/or theology (STL) counts as an added value.
You have demonstrable expertise, both at national and international level, in:

• basic concepts of Canon Law and/or;
• general norms of Canon Law and/or;
• history of Canon Law and/or;
• theology of Canon Law and/or;
• law of religious communities and/or;
• the law of the Oriental Churches and/or;
• marriage law in the Church and the law of matrimonial procedures and/or;
• the hierarchical organization of the Church (the universal and particular Church) and/or;
• ecclesiastical procedural law and/or;

• temporal goods of the Church and/or;

RESEARCH

You conduct excellent research related to several of these areas of Canon Law, as evidenced by internationally reviewed scientific publications, the development of your own research projects and/or the successful supervision of PhD students. You are prepared to engage in inter- and multidisciplinary collaboration with other researchers and research units in the Faculty of Canon Law and beyond, more specifically in the disciplines of Law and Theology.

You are also part of international networks in the academic world. Your publications and/or other research results demonstrate originality, a deep level of abstraction and openness to intra- or interdisciplinary research, as well as the ability to understand and clearly explain the technical nature of Canon Law.

You show the ability to acquire research funding and you demonstrate a willingness to strengthen the position of the research unit through your continued efforts in this area.

TEACHING

You have a solid vision on academic research based teaching, and the ability to provide it. You have demonstrable didactical skills enabling you to contribute to the high quality of the teaching assignments of the Faculty of Canon Law and of the university. You have the necessary skills to teach students from various disciplines so as to allow them to acquire knowledge and skills relating to Canon Law. Commitment to the quality of the educational programs in general is considered self-evident.

Abstract:

The aim of this research project, led by Professor Xavier Prévost, is to place Renaissance Legal humanism in its European context in order to understand the construction of legal nationalisms hidden behind the expression “French method of teaching law” (mos gallicus jura docendi). The recruited researcher will work in close collaboration with the principal investigator and the engineer in digital humanities. The initial task will be to populate a historiographical database, followed by the drafting of two articles on the links between Legal humanism and French legal nationalism.

Training Group "Organizing Architectures¨. The DFG Research Training Group "Organising Architectures" (3022), in which the Goethe University Frankfurt/Main, the Technical University of Darmstadt, the University of Kassel and our institute are involved, focuses on architecture as the organized, collective shaping of modern societies through institutions, networks and discourses. This focus is based on the assumption that observation of social orders cannot b e separated from architectural formations and that these, like the respective architectures, arise through specific, complex social negotiation processes. Are you interested in studying the past, present, and future of multilateralism in a city that is a hub for international negotiation and cooperation? We are looking for four PhD candidates to join the newly founded Research Platform “Multilateralism Revisited: The Past, Present, and Future of International Negotiation and Cooperation” at the University of Vienna (https://multilateralism-revisited.univie.ac.at/). “Multilateralism Revisited,” led by Arne Langlet, Eva-Maria Muschik, Elisabeth Röhrlich, Alice Vadrot, and Michael Waibel, is a joint project of the Faculties of Social Sciences, Historical and Cultural Studies, and Law.

Multilateralism has increasingly come under attack in recent years. At the same time, there is a growing understanding that contemporary issues—from climate change to artificial intelligence to pandemics—are global and require multilateral solutions. The research platform will study challenges to multilateralism in the past, present, and future from an interdisciplinary perspective. Collectively, we will investigate how issues such as global inequalities, institutional fragmentation, and science and technology contestation challenged and continue to challenge multilateralism. 1) the colonial past and its legacies (from a historical and development studies perspective),
2) the governance of dual-use technologies such as nuclear energy and artificial intelligence (from a historical perspective),
3) data sharing in the governance of environmental crimes (from a political science perspective), and 
4) resource extraction in “the global commons” such as the high seas (from an international law perspective).

We are looking for candidates who are eager to develop a PhD research project in one of these four research areas. While each project will be anchored in a primary disciplinary orientation, all projects will be co-supervised by a team member with a different disciplinary background.

You will be affiliated with and based at one of the participating departments, become a member of the interdisciplinary research platform “Multilateralism Revisited,” and join one of the participating doctoral schools.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

 

• You work on your dissertation and its completion within four years
• You work on the dissemination of your research (e.g. through conference participation and publications)
• You become an active member of the new research platform “Multilateralism Revisited”
• You teach courses within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement for Austrian universities (up to two teaching hours per week)
• You participate in, (co-)organize, and contribute to joint activities of the research platform such as workshops, public seminars and lectures, grant-writing, and publications
• You participate in the events of the respective department where you are based

This is part of your academic background and personality:

Necessary:

• Completed above-average master's degree in political science, history, development studies, international law or related disciplines (degree must be conferred no later than the starting date of the position)
• Excellent command of written and spoken English
• Experience with relevant research methods (e.g. archival research, data analysis) and academic writing
• Interest in inter- and transdisciplinary work
• Strong commitment to finish your PhD project within four years
• Commitment to teamwork and required social skills
• Commitment to live in or near Vienna 

 

Asset: 

• Experience with interdisciplinary research and work settings
• Didactic competences (e.g. experience as teaching assistant)
• Interest in science communication beyond academia
• Previous research or practical experience regarding international organizations and multilateralism
• Basic German skills

What we offer:

Duration of employment: The employment duration is 4 years (30 hours/week). Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
