Abstract (in Swedish):

Mia Korpiola är sedan 2014 professor i rättshistoria vid den juridiska fakulteten vid Åbo universitet. Hon är en rättshistoriker med synnerligen bred kompetens och har ägnat sig åt fält som inte tidigare har belysts i forskningen, inte minst genom att bedriva omfattande arkivforskning. Hennes publikationslista är omfattande och sträcker sig över många olika forskningsfält, från tidig medeltida lagstiftning fram till bestämmelser om cyklar under sent 1800-tal. Hennes forskning omfattar inte bara rättsutvecklingen i Sverige och Finland, utan även övriga Norden och Europa. Framför allt har Korpiolas forskning kretsat kring familjerätt, kyrkorätt, rättsliga professioner, ”legal literacy” (förmågan att förstå, tolka och använda rätten i vardagslivet) samt överföringar av rättsliga normer mellan rättsordningar. Korpiola har återkommande ägnat sig åt kvinnornas roll i historien, t.ex. genom att lyfta fram nya perspektiv på den medeltida äktenskapsrätten, kvinnors utnyttjande av rättsliga strategier i arvsrättsliga sammanhang under medeltiden och tidigmodern tid, samt hur män och kvinnor under medeltiden dömdes till olika straff beroende på sitt kön. Korpiola har under de senaste 25 åren återkommande samarbetat med rättshistorikerna i Lund i flera olika forskningsprojekt. Hon var projektledare när rättshistoriker från Lund och Helsingfors uppmärksammade Svea hovrätts 400-årsjubileum 2014. Tillsammans med Elsa Trolle Önnerfors har Korpiola genomfört pionjärarbeten när det gäller de kvinnliga juristerna i historien och deras väg fram till arbete under sent 1800-tal och tidigt 1900-tal. Korpiola deltar både i nordiska och vidare internationella nätverk inom rättshistoria. Hon har haft viktiga funktioner inom European Society for Comparative Legal History.

Mia Korpiola is a professor of legal history at the Faculty of Law, University of Turku (Finland) since 2014. She is a legal historian with an exceptionally broad range of expertise and has devoted herself to fields that have not previously been highlighted in research, not least by conducting extensive archival research. Her list of publications is extensive and spans many different fields of research, from early medieval legislation to regulations on bicycles in the late 19th century. Her research covers not only the development of law in Sweden and Finland, but also the rest of the Nordic region and Europe. Korpiola’s research has primarily focused on family law, canon law, legal professions, legal literacy (the ability to understand, interpret and use the law in everyday life) and the transfer of legal norms between legal systems. Korpiola has repeatedly addressed the role of women in history, for example by highlighting new perspectives on medieval marriage law, women’s use of legal strategies in inheritance law contexts during the Middle Ages and early modern times, and how men and women in the Middle Ages were sentenced to different punishments depending on their gender. Korpiola has collaborated with legal historians in Lund on several research projects over the past 25 years. She was the project leader when legal historians from Lund and Helsinki commemorated the 400 years anniversary of the Svea Court of Appeal in 2014. Together with Elsa Trolle Önnerfors, Korpiola has carried out pioneering work on female lawyers in history and their path to work in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Korpiola participates in both Nordic and wider international networks in legal history. She has held important positions within the European Society for Comparative Legal History.

HONORARY DOCTORATE: Prof. John Cairns (Edinburgh) receives honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow

On Wednesday, 19 June 2024 the University of Glasgow awarded Professor John Cairns, Professor of Civil Law at Edinburgh Law School, the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. The degree was awarded by the University of Glasgow’s Chancellor and Olympian Gold Medallist Dame Katherine Grainger. Dame Grainger Is also a former student of Professor Cairns from her time as an undergraduate law student at Edinburgh Law School.

The University of Lisbon decided to award an honorary doctorate to distinguished legal historian Jean-Louis Halpérin (ENS Paris).

The Ceremony of the Honorary Doctorates to be awarded to Burkhard Hess, Axel Kämmerer and Jean-Louis Halpérin, upon proposal from the Faculty of Law, will take place in the Great Hall of the Universidade de Lisboa, on October 24th, 2023, at 10:00 a.m..

Jean-Louis Halpérin nasceu em Paris em 1960, sendo Licenciado em História (Paris IV) e em Direito (Paris I), Mestre em Direito (Paris II), Doutor em Direito (Paris II) e Agregado em História do Direito. Foi Professor de diversas Universidades francesas, designadamente Paris II, Lyon, Dijon e Bourgogne, sendo, desde 2003, Professor da École Normale Supérieure – PSL e Diretor do Centre de Théorie et Analyse du Droit (CNRS - Université Paris Nanterre - ENS), desde 2015. Foi Professor Convidado e Visitante nas Universidades de Tóquio, Nagoya, Nova Deli, Macerata e Lisboa, entre outras. As suas obras científicas têm incidido fundamentalmente na história e na teoria do direito. Quanto ao primeiro tema, são obras de referência os seus estudos de história do direito privado francês, nomeadamente o direito dos bens, e das instituições, como o tribunal da cassação, a Faculdade de Direito de Paris, os notários e os advogados, bem como a história dos juristas franceses e alemães nos séculos XIX e XX. No segundo núcleo de interesses, avultam os estudos sobre a cultura jurídica europeia, e, mais recentemente, sobre os processos de mundialização, comparando a evolução dos sistemas jurídicos e dos métodos científicos e empíricos utilizados pelos juristas.
