Seit 1980 vergibt das Historische Kolleg ganzjährige (1. Oktober bis 30. September) Fellowships und solche für einen kürzeren Aufenthalt (2 bis max. 6 Monate). Die Förderungen dienen dazu, herausragenden Gelehrten Freiräume zu verschaffen und ein großes Buch zum Abschluss zu bringen.

 

Das Kuratorium des Historischen Kollegs kennt bei der Vergabe der Stipendien keine Beschränkungen im Hinblick auf Herkunftsland, Geschlecht oder Disziplin. Antragsberechtigt sind alle Forschenden, die ein Projekt der historisch arbeitenden Wissenschaften verfolgen.

Presentation:

The Centre for Legal History of India (CLHI) in the Department European and Comparative Legal History at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory (mpilhlt) is dedicated to advancing research and academic collaboration in the field of Indian legal history. Its primary objective is to strengthen and professionalize the discipline by providing training, mentorship, and resources to doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, equipping them to produce high-quality scholarship. The Centre seeks to foster a collaborative environment where scholars can engage in critical dialogue about both the current state and future scope of research and pedagogy in this diverse field. Building on a multilateral network connecting institutions and researchers within India and internationally, the Centre showcases the richness and breadth of Indian legal history, identifying areas of common ground while highlighting the diversity of legal traditions and interdisciplinary perspectives. Indian legal history has long been a significant focus in the Department of European and Comparative Legal History, especially in the context of the study of legal transfers within the common law world. Given the central role of the Indian subcontinent in the history of the British Empire and the deep and varied legal traditions therein, the Centre aims to contribute towards developing legal history in India as a distinct and valuable field of study that merits dedicated resources and sustained scholarly attention. The Centre maintains formal collaborations with leading Indian law schools NLSIU Bangalore and NALSAR. It is supported by a Centre Advisory Council and has a dedicated visitors’ programme.

FELLOWSHIP: Brennan Center's Steven M. Polan Fellowship in Constitutional Law and History 2025-2026 (DEADLINE 15 FEB 2025)

 Abstract:

The Brennan Center [for Justice] is inviting applications for the 2025-26 class of the Steven M. Polan Fellowship in Constitutional Law and History, a fellowship program aimed at enhancing public understanding and appreciation of the meaning and promise of the United States Constitution. The Fellowship is open to outstanding individuals from an array of professional backgrounds – including historians and other experts in constitutional law and history – working on projects to spur urgently needed debate over the proper understanding of our Constitution at this crucial moment, when new approaches to constitutional interpretation including originalism, incubated by the conservative legal movement over the past half century, have gained traction in the courts. These projects may include conducting legal and historical research, publishing original writing, crafting amicus briefs, organizing symposia and public events, spearheading public education projects, and other activities as appropriate.

Practical aspects:

Proposals are due by February 15, 2025. These nonresident, part-time fellowships will be one year in duration. Fellows will be awarded compensation in the form of a $40,000 stipend. The Fellowship is open both to experienced individuals with a proven track record of achievement and expertise and to people at earlier stages of their careers who demonstrate the potential to develop into leaders in their field. We’re looking for visionaries who are animated by the challenge of reclaiming our Constitution as an enduring plan of government suited to the needs of a changing country.

The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) awards 8–10 fellowships for doctoral students in European history, the history of religion and other historical disciplines.

The IEG funds PhD projects in European history from early modern to contemporary history. We are particularly interested in projects

• with a comparative or cross-border approach
• on European history in its relation to the wider world
• on topics of intellectual and religious history
• that make use of digital tools and methods.

What we offer
IEG Fellowships provide a unique opportunity to pursue and finalise individual PhD projects while living and working at the Institute in Mainz for 6–12 months. The monthly stipend is € 1,350. Additionally, it is possible to apply for family or child allowance.

Requirements
Successful candidates are required to reside at the Institute in Mainz throughout the duration of their fellowship. They are expected to be active members on the IEG’s research community and to participate in the weekly colloquia and scholarly activities. Moreover, they will present their work in progress at least once during their stay. The IEG supports the writing up of dissertations and does not provide funding for preliminary research, language courses or the revision of book manuscripts. At the time of the application deadline, candidates should have pursued their PhD for a maximum of three years. PhD theses continue to be supervised under the auspices of the fellows' home universities. We expect proficiency in English. The IEG encourages applications from women.

Abstract:

The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library has relaunched and expanded its fellowship program to facilitate research in Yale’s special collections by the broadest possible group of researchers. We welcome applications from scholars and graduate students locally and globally who utilize traditional methods of archival and bibliographic research as well as from individuals who wish to pursue creative, interdisciplinary, and non-traditional approaches to conducting research in the collections. Fellowships will be awarded in the amount of $5,000 per month for varying lengths of time. Fellowship application deadlines and requirements can be found on our website. FELLOWSHIP: Burghley Visiting Fellowship - St John’s College, Cambridge - Applications open (DEADLINE 5September 2022)

 Burghley Visiting Fellowship – Applications open

The Burghley Visiting Fellowship is intended to support and promote research into the lives and activities of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, and Mildred Cecil, Lady Burghley, and the worlds in which they lived. It provides an opportunity for those actively engaged in research in this area to spend up to two terms resident at St John’s College, Cambridge, pursuing archival research and/or completing a project. Fellows will also be welcome to spend time working in the Archives at Hatfield House.

Applicants should make a case for the significance and relevance of their research. They should outline the project to be carried out whilst in Cambridge and detail their plans for publication and further dissemination of their findings through scholarship and education.

This is a non-stipendary fellowship. The Burghley Visiting Fellow will be provided with accommodation and meals in College and an additional allowance to cover travel and books. They will be expected to remain in residence in Cambridge and to actively participate in college life for the duration of the Fellowship.

Applications will be considered from staff of any university or other institution of higher learning, and from other suitably qualified persons who wish to carry out scholarly work in Cambridge. We welcome Fellowship applications from both UK and overseas candidates. The Fellowship is not intended to support those completing PhD theses but early career scholars are encouraged to apply.

It is proposed that the next Fellow will take up residence in January 2023; applicants should confirm that this is possible for them and whether they wish to spend one or two terms in Cambridge. Arrangements are subject to alteration depending on the accommodation available at the College and any changes to international travel.
