 Burghley Visiting Fellowship – Applications open

The Burghley Visiting Fellowship is intended to support and promote research into the lives and activities of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, and Mildred Cecil, Lady Burghley, and the worlds in which they lived. It provides an opportunity for those actively engaged in research in this area to spend up to two terms resident at St John’s College, Cambridge, pursuing archival research and/or completing a project. Fellows will also be welcome to spend time working in the Archives at Hatfield House.

Applicants should make a case for the significance and relevance of their research. They should outline the project to be carried out whilst in Cambridge and detail their plans for publication and further dissemination of their findings through scholarship and education.

This is a non-stipendary fellowship. The Burghley Visiting Fellow will be provided with accommodation and meals in College and an additional allowance to cover travel and books. They will be expected to remain in residence in Cambridge and to actively participate in college life for the duration of the Fellowship.

Applications will be considered from staff of any university or other institution of higher learning, and from other suitably qualified persons who wish to carry out scholarly work in Cambridge. We welcome Fellowship applications from both UK and overseas candidates. The Fellowship is not intended to support those completing PhD theses but early career scholars are encouraged to apply.

It is proposed that the next Fellow will take up residence in January 2023; applicants should confirm that this is possible for them and whether they wish to spend one or two terms in Cambridge. Arrangements are subject to alteration depending on the accommodation available at the College and any changes to international travel.

The deadline for applications is Monday 5 September 2022. WORKSHOP SERIES: Legal and Social History (Cambridge, October-December 2019)

We learned of a workshop series on legal and social history at the University of Cambridge.

The Legal and Social History Workshop welcomes speakers and attendees working on or interested in socio-legal history, irrespective of period or location.

This workshop is for those interested in socio-legal history. The interdisciplinary nature of this topic produces a need cross-departmental work and thus this workshop welcomes attendees from all Faculties. As a thematic workshop, we aim to connect students working on different periods and locations that may have encountered the same methodological problems and research questions.

The conveners are committed to creating a friendly environment for students to test new research and ideas on socio-legal history, irrespective of period or location. In Michaelmas, we will accept abstracts from current PhD students, whereas in Lent and Easter we will encourage papers from MPhil and first year PhDs. There will be an end-of-year conference in May/June 2020.  

We meet fortnightly on Tuesdays at 5:15pm in the History Faculty Boardroom.

Emmanuel College Research Fellowships 2019

The Governing Body of Emmanuel College invites applications for three stipendiary Research Fellowships in any subject; all three Fellowships are for a three-year fixed term, and will commence on 1 October, 2019.

Applications will be accepted from any graduate of a university within or outside the United Kingdom.  Eligibility is restricted to those for whom the Research Fellowship would be their first substantial, paid academic or research appointment (other than as a doctoral student).

These Fellowships are intended for outstanding researchers early in their careers: successful candidates are likely to be in the latter stages of their research leading to a PhD degree, or post-doctoral researchers who have been awarded their PhD degree after 1 October, 2017.  Candidates should note that these Fellowships are extremely competitive.

The stipend for Research Fellows is related to the national academic scale.  The current stipends are £24,507 (£32,237 if not resident in College) for post-doctoral Research Fellows and £23,012 (£30,741 if not resident in College) for pre-doctoral Research Fellows.  Pre-doctoral Research Fellows will be responsible for any University fee they incur up to the level of a UK post-graduate student; the College will contribute the difference if a higher fee is applicable.  Fellows are permitted to receive additional remuneration for up to six hours College or University teaching a week.
