The Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH) is a high-quality record of over 660,000 publications relating to British and Irish History. This page helps you get the most from BBIH and shows how to use it in a blended learning environment.

The BBIH is the largest and most comprehensive record of what's been published in British and Irish History, and the British empire -- as well as on histories of migration, gender and race. BBIH has detailed records of over 660,000 books, articles, essays and theses, including thousands that were published this year. Each record has a detailed index to help discoverability. Records also provide links to locate a copy of a book in your Library, or go direct to journal article if your Library subscribes. This makes BBIH the best way to find what's been published, create reading lists, write a literature review, or swiftly identify the different kinds of academic publications used at university.

REMINDER: CALL FOR SUPPORT STATEMENTS: Bibliografie van de Geschiedenis van België/Lettres de soutien Bibliographie de l'histoire de Belgique (BGB-BHB)

Since 2012, the Belgian Royal Commission for History has taken care of the Bibliography of the history of Belgium. Notwithstanding the effort this annual task requires - carried out by a paid staff member -,  the funding the Commission receives for this effort is limited and uncertain. Over the past two years, a subsidy granted by the National Lottery has brought relief, but the future of even this subsidy is now uncertain. Without it, the very existence of the Bibliography is at risk.

To strenghten the Commission's case before the National Lottery, Guy Vanthemsche, the Commission's secretary, now asks for letters of support - both Belgian and international, from the academic as well as from the cultural and political worlds. If you wish to contribute to the continued existence of the Bibliography, even a short statement of support can help to convince the National Lottery of the importance of the Bibliography for historical research.

The Commission's dossier has to be submitted before the middle of next month - October. Statements of support can be emailed to Guy.Vanthemsche@vub.be.

Sinds 2012 verzorgt de Belgische Koninklijke Commissie voor Geschiedenis de Bibliografie van de geschiedenis van België. Ondanks de inspanning die deze jaarlijkse taak vereist - uitgevoerd door een enkel betaald personeelslid - is de financiering door de Commissie voor deze inspanning beperkt en onzeker. De afgelopen twee jaar heeft een subsidie van de Nationale Loterij verlichting gebracht, maar de sinds kort staat ook deze toelage op de helling, zodat het voortbestaan van de Bibliografie op korte termijn in het gedrang kan komen.

Om de zaak van de Commissie voor de Nationale Loterij te versterken, vraagt Guy Vanthemsche, de secretaris van de Commissie, nu om steunbrieven. Hiervoor wordt gerekend op bijdragen van stemmen uit de binnen- en buitenlandse academische, culturele, en politieke wereld. Als u wenst bij te dragen tot het voortbestaan van de Bibliografie, kan zelfs een korte steunbetuiging helpen om de Nationale Loterij te overtuigen van het belang van de Bibliografie voor het historisch onderzoek.

Het dossier van de Commissie moet voor het midden van volgende maand - oktober worden ingediend. Steunbetuigingen kunnen worden gemaild naar guy.vanthemsche@vub.be.

Depuis 2012, la Commission royale d'Histoire de Belgique fournit la Bibliographie de l'Histoire de Belgique. Malgré l'effort requis pour cette tâche annuelle - effectuée par un seul membre du personnel rémunéré - le financement de cet effort par la Commission est limité et incertain. Au cours des deux dernières années, une subvention de la Loterie Nationale a permis de soulager la situation, mais cette subvention a récemment été remise en cause, ce qui pourrait mettre en péril la survie de la Bibliographie à court terme.

Afin de renforcer le dossier de la Commission nationale des loteries, Guy Vanthemsche, le secrétaire de la Commission, demande maintenant des lettres de soutien. À cette fin, on attend des contributions des milieux universitaires, culturels et politiques nationaux et étrangers. Si vous souhaitez contribuer à la pérennité de la Bibliographie, même une brève déclaration de soutien peut aider à convaincre la Loterie Nationale de l'importance de la Bibliographie pour la recherche historique.

Oliver Wendell Holmes was one of the most influential figures in American law. As a Supreme Court Justice, he wrote foundational opinions about such important constitutional issues as freedom of speech and the limits of state regulatory power. As a scholar and Massachusetts High Court judge, he helped to reshape the common law for the modern industrial era. And yet, despite the many accounts of his career, Holmes himself remains an enigma. This book is the first to explore the nineteenth-century New England influences so crucial to the formation of his character. Inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson's transcendentalism, Holmes belonged to a group of men who formulated a philosophy known as American pragmatism that stood as an alternative to English empiricism and German rationalism. This innovative study places Holmes within the transcendentalist, pragmatist tradition and thereby unlocks his unique identity and contribution to American law. Wells' nuanced analysis will appeal to legal scholars, historians, philosophers, and general readers alike.

Peter Brett (1918–1975), Alice Erh-Soon Tay (1934–2004) and Geoffrey Sawer (1910–1996) are key, yet largely overlooked, members of Australia's first community of legal scholars. This book is a critical study of how their ideas and endeavours contributed to Australia's discipline of law and the first Australian legal theories. It examines how three marginal figures – a Jewish man (Brett), a Chinese woman (Tay), and a war orphan (Sawer) – rose to prominence during a transformative period for Australian legal education and scholarship.

Drawing on in-depth interviews with former colleagues and students, extensive archival research, and an appraisal of their contributions to scholarship and teaching, this book explores the three professors' international networks and broader social and historical milieux.
