CFP: 'Rediscovering Inquisition Research and new perspectives from the Archives of the Inquisition(s)' (Naples, 17-18 SEPT 2025 ) [DEADLINE 30 NOV 2024]

(Source: EEHAR)

The inquisitorial archives have undergone a process of dispersal over the past two centuries, the outcomes of which are only partly known. While some large inquisitorial funds are still preserved in public and private institutions, the destination of many other archives (or archival series) has been more troubled and, in some cases, not well known.

This call for papers intends to gather contributions, especially from young researchers, regarding new studies and/or new discoveries on inquisitorial archives, with a focus on the archives of the local courts of the (Roman, Spanish or Portuguese) Inquisition.

Contributions could be focused on:

- little-known or not yet studied funds or archival series of inquisitorial courts;

- newly discovered funds that survived documentary dispersion (e.g., correspondence, instructions, etc.);

- trials or files that shed new lights on the history of the Inquisition;

- new discoveries on the libraries of local courts of the Inquisition;

- the history of documentary funds of inquisitorial origin. All speakers will be required to give a brief preliminary overview on the history of the inquisitorial court investigated, from the origin to the suppression phase.

The conference will take place on 17-18 September 2025 in Naples. Reimbursement of travel expenses (up to a maximum of 200 euros from Italy and 400 euros from abroad) and lodging will be provided. Selected papers will be published in a final volume. The article submissions are due by 1st November 2025.

Each proposal should contain an abstract of the content to be illustrated (400-500 words) and a short cv of the proposer (200 words). Deadline for proposal submission: November 30, 2024. Acceptance will be communicated by December 15, 2024. Infos and proposal submission (Organization): Silvia Toppetta - silvia.toppetta@unimore.it (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia)

ARTICLE: Achille MAROTTA, "The Muslim Friend: Cross-Confessional Male Intimacy in Eighteenth-Century Italy" (The Journal of Early Modern History ) 230-252 [OPEN ACCESS]

(iamge source: Brill)

Abstract:

In early modern Italy, stereotypes about Muslim men’s supposed inclination towards the vice of ‘sodomy’ gave rise to fears that Christian masculinity was being tainted. Eighteenth-century court records from the Republic of Genoa and the Papal States contain numerous instances of cross-confessional male relations that faced persecution by state authorities. In each of these cases, Christian men were prosecuted for taking a sexually ‘passive’ role in relation to sexually ‘active’ Muslims, while the reverse scenario was never pursued. This article argues that the sexual focus of judicial authorities obscured the enduring bonds of affection and mutual obligation that developed between men across religious lines. The existence of these relationships unveils an intimate sphere of connections across faith in the early modern Mediterranean while highlighting an intersectional site of Christian social anxiety, where fears of religious contamination overlapped with concerns about same-sex intimacy.

CFP: ‘The Cloven Dukes’ The Mediterranean diplomacy of the small Italian powers (1530-1730) - 7-8 November 2023, Haifa [DEADLINE 1 MAY 2023]

(Source: HCMH)

Organizers: Davide Trentacoste (HCMH) & Francesco Caprioli (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid).

Diplomatic history is one of the fields that has best embodied the global and cultural turn that in recent decades has led scholars to focus on various historical phenomena in new spaces through new methodological lenses. Under the umbrella category of “New Diplomatic History”, scholarship on early modern Mediterranean diplomacy has programmatically gone beyond and reworked some of the conventional topics and paradigms related to the political relations established between Christian and Muslim powers. In this field of study, various studies have shown how the early modern Mediterranean context was characterized not only by a political-religious clash, but also by intense exchanges and dialogue, shaped among powers of different cultures and confessions. However, most of these investigations have only emphasized the relations established by the major Latin-Christian European political entities (i.e., the Habsburg Empire, the Republic of Venice, or the Spanish and French monarchies), leaving other actors in the background, such as Italian regional powers like Parma, Modena, or Lucca.

Following on from these premises, this conference intends to explore the diplomatic strategies, models, agencies, and practices adopted by Italian duchies and republics when negotiating with the Ottomans, the Safavids or the various Muslim polities of North Africa, and to compare them with those traditionally deployed in the European context.

By addressing the issue of Christian-Muslim diplomatic relations through the eyes of the small Italian regional powers during the early modern times, our aim will be twofold: first, we want to offer a fresh overview of the small Italian powers’ diplomatic strategies towards Muslim states throughout the early modern age. Secondly, we want to provide a useful discussion about similarities and dissimilarities among small Italian states regarding how they used diplomacy to represent themselves outside the Latin-Christian world.

Themes

The conference themes may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Differences and similarities in small Italian states’ diplomatic strategies. How did they act outside Latin-Christian Europe and how did they present themselves when dealing with Muslim powers?
  2. Diplomatic agencies and practices used by small Italian states when negotiating with Muslim powers. Was there a culture of interfaith diplomacy shared by these regional powers during the early modern age?
  3. Changes and continuities in small Italian states’ policy. To what extent did diplomatic negotiations with Muslim rulers alter the policy of Italian regional powers and how they were perceived in the Christian world?

SPECIAL ISSUE: Stratégies et procédures d’identification des étrangers (mondes hispaniques-Méditerranée, xviie-xixe siècles) (ed. Arnaud BARTOLOMEI & Sylain LLORET) (Mélanges de la Casa de Vélazquez LI (2021), nr. 1)

Arnaud Bartolomei et Sylvain Lloret Présentation

Óscar Recio Morales Gobernar la alteridad El «Protector de Extranjeros» en España (siglos xvi-xviii)
Abstract:
The legal figure of the protector has its roots in the Roman Empire; it was taken up by the Christianity associated with the concept of charity and recovered in modern Europe in its triple aspect of guardian, mediator and defender. In the Spanish administration, the figure of the protector of the indians is the best known, thanks to the numerous studies on the legal status of the indigenous. The «Protector of Foreigners», on the other hand, is virtually unknown. This contribution examines its evolution and the practice of protection. It argues that the «Protector of Foreigners» could have contributed to the management of an otherness that moved, in a short time frame, from a reduced peninsular space to a global dimension. The practice of protection, however, was channelled by such a complex, technical list of subsidies, and such a broad set of non-institutionalised social mechanisms, that there was, in fact, an abundance of figures acting as protectors.
Abstract:
Mercantilism views the population as wealth, as a resource that must be protected. To prevent emigration and transform it into controlled expatriation, the States implement restrictive legislation. In France, this desire is reflected in a series of texts designed to prevent its subjects from settling permanently abroad. Through these measures the government pursues several objectives. The most important being to ensure that the assets amassed by the expatriates eventually find their way back to France. Another objective concerns only non-Catholic countries and, first and foremost, the Ottoman Empire. The authorities try to do everything possible to prevent their nationals converting to Islam. The article offers an analysis of the motivations that lead the French government to control expatriation. Above all, it will clarify the role that French consuls play in its implementation.

Abstract:
In 1796, the French consul in Cadiz refused to record «on the matricular register» of French citizens residing abroad, compatriots who, five years earlier, had agreed to take an oath of loyalty to the King of Spain to escape the threats of expulsion that then weighed on French nationals. This decision gave rise to protests and led the political authorities of the Directorate to rule on the case of the citizens who took these oaths and, more generally, on the meaning of the consular registration procedure. The debates between the most radical elements of the revolutionary government, who wanted to exclude those who had taken the oath from French nationality, and the pragmatists, anxious not to deprive France of part of its living forces, lead to the question of the condition of foreigners in modern Europe, and the changes induced by the revolutionary rupture, from the point of view of their country of origin.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The question of the nationality of Spaniards born in the monarchy’s European territories but living in America was complex and was debated in the States that had gained independence. Opinions oscillated between the universal declaration of citizenship and the equally universal expulsion of the natives of the old metropolis, both at times occurring within the same country. This work offers an analysis of the way in which this was resolved by the various new Nation-States, with particular attention to the Mexican case, on the assumption that it was not only an administrative problem, but that it formed part of the process of national construction in Latin America. A problem of nation rather than State.
Abstract:
Since the capture of Algiers in 1830, Algerian Muslims and Jews who took refuge in this Ottoman regency could benefit from French consular protection under certain conditions and if they requested it. Few of them accepted being registered in this way. However, in 1865, Napoleon III’s declaration that the Arabs of Algeria were now French nationals, and no longer subjects, led to them hoping for «the right to have rights». The legal recognition of French national affiliation did not allow the Algerian colonised people to become French citizens collectively. However, it provoked a conflict of sovereignty between the French consulate and the bey of Tunis, the victims of which were the French-registered Algerians: some were deported by the Tunisian government to French Algeria, others were «denationalised» by the consulate if they continued to live within the «Tunisian nation»

ABOUT THE BOOK

Series: The Medieval Mediterranean, Volume: 122

This book investigates perceptions, modes, and techniques of Venetian rule in the early modern Eastern Mediterranean (1400–1700). Against the backdrop of the controversial notion of the Venetian realm as a colonial empire, essays from a range of specialists examine how Venice negotiated control over the territories, resources, and traditions of different empires (Byzantine, Roman, Mamluk, Ottoman) while developing its own claims of authority. Focusing in particular on questions of belonging and status in the Venetian overseas territories, the volume incorporates observations on the daily realities of Venetian rule: how did Venice negotiate claims of authority in light of former and ongoing imperial belongings? What was the status of colonial subjects and ships in the metropolis and in foreign territories? In what ways did Venice accept and continue old forms of imperial belonging? Did subordinate entities join in a shared communal identity? The volume opens new perspectives on Venetian rule at the crossroads of empire and early modern statehood: a polity negotiating and entangling empire.

BOOK: Margarita TORREMOCHA HERNANDEZ & Alberto CORADA ALONSO, El estupro: delito, mujer y sociedad en el Antiguo Régimen (Valladolid, Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid, 2018). ISBN: 8484489892, pp. 314, 21 €

ABOUT THE BOOK
