BOOK: Lars REGULA & Jörg ULBERT (eds.), Consular Jurisdiction. On the History of the Judicial Functions of Consulates (12th–20th Century) [Legal History Library, eds. Dirk HEIRBAUT, Matthew C. MIROW, Michelle McKINLEY & C.H VAN REE, 83; Studies in the History of International Law, ed. Randall LESAFFER, 30] (Leiden/Boston: Martinus Nijhoff/Brill, 2026), ISBN 978-90-04-75519-2

Abstract:
For today’s practitioners, the history of the judicial functions of consulates is far more colourful and obscure than modern consular law might suggest. Take, for instance, Consul Annibale de Rossetti in Egypt, who had to arbitrate a lawsuit between two German merchants and was completely overwhelmed. De Rossetti neither knew German nor was he familiar with the law he was expected to apply. Modern consuls often react with disbelief at the fact that their predecessors acted not only as judges, but also as regulatory authorities and bailiffs. This volume brings together contributions on the history of the legal roles and functions of consulates, spanning from America to China and from their origins in the Middle Ages to the modern consulate.

BOOK: Catherine BRICE (Ed.), Exile and the Circulation of Political Practices (Cambridge Scholars Publishing , 2020). ISBN: 1-5275-4812-0, pp. 225, £61.99

    ABOUT THE BOOK

During the 18th century, visitors would come and attend the British Parliament sessions in order to understand how a representative assembly could technically function, because politics is not only about ideas, but also a lot about practices and techniques. A great deal has been written on the circulation of political ideas during the 19th century, and on the part played by exiles, refugees and military volunteers in this intellectual mobility. However, less is known of what constitutes, in the end, politics: not only ideas, but practices, the material implementation of politics. How does one debate, vote, or demonstrate? What is political representation? How does one “start” a political party, and run it? All the political engineering, of the 19th century, the period of the birth of modern politics, has been the result of an intense circulation of exiles, which, along with bringing in new ideas, borrowed new ways of “making politics”. This is what this book contemplates through a wide range of examples showing how exile turned out to be, during the century of the revolutions, the laboratory of a new political grammar and of political practices resulting in the cross-fertilization between host countries and exiled communities.

    ABOUT THE BOOK

    CALL FOR PROPOSALS

XI JORNADAS DE HISTORIA MODERNA Y CONTEMPORÁNEA “Gobierno y representación en la Edad Moderna y Contemporánea”

    Universidad Nacional del Sur, Argentina
Deadline 30 DE ABRIL DE 2020

Coordinadores generales: Dra. Ana Mónica González Fasani (UNS) – Dr. Guillermo Nieva Ocampo (UNSa./CONICET) – Dra. Carolina Biernat (UNQ/CONICET).

XV-XVIII)”, del Consejo de Investigación de la Universidad Nacional de Salta; Instituto Universitario “La Corte en Europa” de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid; Carrera de Licenciatura en Historia de la Universidad Nacional de Quilmes; Centro de Estudios Sociales de América Latina (Facultad de Ciencias Humanas – Universidad Nacional del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires/Comisión de Investigaciones Científicas).
