Book abstract:

The Companion to the Spanish Scholastics offers a much-needed survey of the entire field of early modern Spanish scholastic thought. The volume introduces main themes and contexts of scholastics inquiry (Theology, Philosophy, Ethics, Politics, Economics, Law, Science and the Senses) through close examination of a wide range of texts, debates, methods, and authors, as well as in-depth discussion of the relevant literature. Chapters include a useful bibliography and serve as point of departure for future research. The volume not only draws the sum of existing research, but challenges established notions and breaks new ground. Contributors are Fernanda Alfieri, Harald Braun, Paolo Broggio, Alejandro Chafuen, Wim Decock, Fernando Domínguez Reboiras, Thomas Duve, Petr Dvořák, Giovanni Gellera, Juan Manuel Gómez Paris, Christophe Grellard, Miroslav Hanke, Ruth Hill, Harro Höpfl, Nils Jansen, Vincenzo Lavenia, Thomas Marschler, Fabio Monsalve, Thomas Pink, Rudolf Schüssler, Daniel Schwartz, Leen Spruit, Toon Van Houdt, María José Vega, and Andreas Wagner.

 On the editors:

Harald Ernst Braun, D.Phil. Oxon. (2001), is Reader in European History (1300-1700) at the University of Liverpool. He has published widely on early modern Catholic, especially Spanish political thought and culture. Erik De Bom, Ph.D. (2009), KU Leuven, is Research Fellow at that university. He has published on the history of political thought in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, early-modern intellectual history and Renaissance humanism. Paolo Astorri, Ph.D. (2018), KU Leuven, is Postdoctoral Researcher in Legal History at the University of Copenhagen, Centre for Privacy Studies. His book Lutheran Theology and Contract Law in Early Modern Germany (ca. 1520-1720), published in Brill’s new series Law and Religion in Early Modern Period, won the RefoRc book award in 2020.

Au fil des années, l’Europe est devenue un objet central de la philosophie politique d’Étienne Balibar. Née sur le terreau de sa réflexion sur le racisme, cette pensée s’est concentrée de plus en plus sur la construction européenne et ses impasses. En ce sens, il s’agit d’une vision marquée par la crise et, en même temps, guidée par le souci et l’urgence de sa démocratisation ou, ce qui revient au même, de sa transformation. Les problèmes de la citoyenneté, des frontières, du positionnement géopolitique, de la constitution, des choix économiques, des migrants ont ainsi alimenté l’élaboration d’un ensemble de concepts originaux pour penser ces enjeux, formant une œuvre dont l’ampleur et l’extension n’a probablement d’autre équivalent dans le domaine philosophique contemporain que l’entreprise de Jürgen Habermas, avec laquelle Balibar entreprend un débat à distance. Les auteures et les auteurs de cet ouvrage – juristes, philosophes, politistes, venus de France et d’ailleurs – engagent à leur tour un dialogue productif avec les principaux concepts et propositions d’Étienne Balibar sur l’Europe, convaincus de leur intérêt théorique intrinsèque mais également de l’horizon post-national dans lequel le politique se déploie désormais. Avec les contributions de Sébastien Roland, Carlos M. Herrera, Ulrike Guérot, Ninon Grangé, Antoine Vauchez, Sandro Mezzadra et Michal Kozlowski.

La pandémie du Covid-19 a constitué un test grandeur nature, un catalyseur, pour penser les forces et les fragilités de nos sociétés, pour en interroger l'organisation et les valeurs. Elle s'est du même coup révélée comme une extraordinaire matière à penser pour les sciences humaines et sociales. Le présent ouvrage en constitue un témoignage. Issu des échanges menés dès le début de la crise au sein de l'Institut des sciences juridique et philosophique de la Sorbonne (ISJPS), il entend interroger, enrichir ou repenser toute une série de questions, concepts et cadres théoriques au coeur du droit et de la philosophie. Dix-huit mois plus tard, et en conjuguant de façon unique les approches, les regards et les méthodes juridiques, sociales, philosophiques, il propose une analyse de la pandémie sous trois angles : les libertés, les vulnérabilités, la place de l'expertise dans les décisions publiques.
