Arca est à la fois la bibliothèque numérique de l’IRHT (Institut de recherche et d’histoire des textes du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) et le répertoire des cotes de manuscrits, incunables et livres anciens conservés dans les bibliothèques du monde entier.

Arca, nouvelle base, résultant de la fusion des deux bases historiques de l'IRHT (BVMM et Medium) et destinée à les remplacer, permet désormais de consulter dans une interface unifiée les informations autour des cotes des manuscrits, de leurs reproductions mais également de leurs numérisations. L'accès s'effectue via un moteur de recherche qui se veut simple mais rapide et efficace, et les notices de manuscrits synthétisent les métadonnées et les reproductions disponibles. Les numérisations sont consultables et exploitables grâce au protocole IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework).

Via Hsozkult, we learned of a call for applicants for the 2nd Verona International Summer School in Medieval Manuscripts.

“It provides an overview of the main elements of Latin palaeography, showing the evolution of letter forms and most common ab- breviation systems; the course consists of prac- tical exercises, reading and transcribing several different types of script. It is also open to stu- dents with some experience in Latin and Greek palaeography, who wish to refresh or improve their skills. Participants must have elementaryLatin in order to benefit from lectures; whenapplying, they should indicate whether they had any previous experience in palaeography. […]”

We learned of a call for papers about Law and image: illuminated legal manuscripts. The electronic review, is preparing a thematic file on illuminations in legal manuscripts.

DEADLINES : An abstarct or title has to be sent before 1 September 2020, and the article before 31 December 2020.

NOTE :  The review is primarly in French, however, papers in English, Spanish and Italian are welcome as well.

Clio@Themis, in collaboration with the research team IUS ILLUMINATUM of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, has decided to devote a thematic dossier, planned for the year 2021, to Illuminated legal manuscripts. The dossier, placed under the scientific coordination of Maria Alessandra Bilotta (IEM-FCSH/NOVA, principal researcher of the IUS ILLUMINATUM team) and Serge Dauchy (Centre d’histoire judiciaire, CNRS, Lille), aims to create an opportunity for dialogue between historians of illumination and legal historians and an opportunity to explore the different aspects of the decoration and illustration of the medieval legal manuscript.

Papers (20 to 25 p.), will be written in French, English, Spanish or Italian. Only illustrations that are free of copyright or for which a free publication authorization has been granted may be published (in colour) online.
Contributions may include, but are not limited, to the following topics:

1. The relationship between text and image in legal manuscripts
2. Marginal decorations in illuminated legal manuscripts
3. The circulation of illuminated legal manuscripts in Europe in the Middle Ages
4. The study of fragments of illuminated legal manuscripts
5. The production of illuminated legal manuscripts
6. Peciae and illuminated legal manuscripts
7. Customary Law, ‘Oath Books’ and Illuminated Statuti
8. The transition from the illuminated legal manuscript to the printed book

We learned of a Call for Papers from “The Transformations of Medieval Law” Project, on the materiality of medieval and early modern law mansuscripts. Here the call: 

In connection with the 2019 congress theme of Materialities, we are seeking papers for sessions on the materiality of medieval and early modern law manuscripts. This session explores the materiality of medieval legal texts at different stages of their use, from their initial production and layout, to binding with other texts, marks made by users, translation, and printing. We are particularly interested in how the materiality of legal manuscripts reflects how they transformed through time as needs of their users changed.

Topics might include but are not limited to:

• the production of law manuscripts

• the layout of law manuscripts

• the compilation of law manuscripts

• user marks in law manuscripts

• the translation of law manuscripts

• multilingual law manuscripts

• the transition from manuscript to printing

We welcome research on manuscripts from any legal tradition and comparative approaches.

Ce Cours abordera les étapes plus significatives de l’histoire de la production, illustration et décoration des manuscrits universitaires au Moyen Âge (Droit, Théologie, Médecine) avec une considérable attention pour les aspects codicologiques (caractéristiques matérielles, fonctionnalité structurelle du livre manuscrit dans le contexte de l’enseignement universitaire), stylistiques et iconographiques (les cycles iconographiques) ; les questions liées aux commanditaires (maitres et étudiants) et à leur circulation (la peregrinatio academica) dans les territoires européens. Encore, ce Cours abordera le contexte historique, économique et social de cette production (contrôle des universités sur la production des livres) et les techniques de production (fonctionnement des ateliers des stationarii ; système de la pecia)

Les textes médiévaux sont parfois comparés à des excroissances de sources qui les précèdent, envers lesquelles ils ont une dette, puisqu’ils y empruntent des éléments, s’en font les passeurs et adaptateurs. La dette littéraire constitue indéniablement l’un des traits définitoires de la production textuelle au Moyen Âge. Preuve en sont, entre autres, Lay le Freine et Sir Launfal, des lais bretons moyen-anglais. Un autre aspect du contexte médiéval concerne l’essor dans l’Occident chrétien à partir du XIIIe siècle d’un système économique florissant. L’expansion économique, concomitante à la croissance urbaine, exerce une influence décisive sur la conception chrétienne de l’argent et des contrats financiers (voir le Tractatus de Contractibus de Pierre Jean de Olivi à la fin du XIIIe siècle).
