The University of Helsinki invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Legal History within the Centre of Excellence in Meliorist Philosophy of Suffering (MePhiS), funded by the Research Council of Finland. The position is based in the research team History of Ethics and Law of Responding to Suffering, hosted by the Faculty of Theology.The successful candidate will conduct research in medieval or early modern legal history, with particular attention to how historical crises—including wars, famine, and natural catastrophes—challenged legal and ethical norms and how such circumstances were addressed through legislation and politics. The researcher will undertake independent and collaborative publications, participate in MePhiS activities, and contribute to teaching and administrative duties (approximately 5–10% of working time).Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in a relevant humanities or social-sciences field, demonstrate expertise in legal history and the capacity for independent research, and possess excellent written and spoken English. International academic experience and high-quality peer-reviewed publications will be taken into account.The appointment is for three years, beginning in January 2027 or at another mutually agreed date. The annual gross salary is approximately €43,000–€50,000, depending on personal performance.
