6 open positions are available at the University of Padua, Italy (36 months) funded within the framework of my ERC Consolidator Grant "Migrating Commercial Law and Language. Rethinking Lex Mercatoria (11th-17th Cent.)" - MICOLL (awarded to Prof. Stefania Gialdroni). The deadline is December 17th 2021.

The calls are addressed to PhD graduates, or graduates with a Master’s degree in legal, historical, economic, archival, paleographic, diplomatic and linguistic disciplines, with a suitable and documented academic and professional experience in an area related to the aforementioned research fields. The position, which is called “assegno di ricerca”, is similar to a “post-doc” position even though a PhD is not necessary but only recommended in order to apply. The contracts will start on the 1st of March 2022 and will last 36 months.

They are all very interdisciplinary as the focus of the project relies in the relationship between legal and economic history and historical linguistics. The overall aim is, in fact, to analyze the development of commercial law between the 11th and 17th centuries, in the geographical area comprising Northern Italy and present-day Germany, through the tools of historical linguistics. The borrowing and transfer of legal terms will be carried out through a comprehensive and systematic survey of medieval and early modern legal sources, in particular commercial letters, contracts and statutes, both published and unpublished. The analysis of technical-legal words used in commercial transactions will allow to verify the impact of merchants’ migrations on the development of law as well as on social and economic history. The archival research will focus in the first instance on the following archives: Archivio di Stato di Venezia (Venice), Archivio di Stato di Genova (Genoa), Stadtarchiv Nürnberg (Nuremberg) and Archiv der Hansestadt Lübeck. The project foresees the creation of a "Glossary of Medieval Commercial Law Terms" and of interactive digital maps of the routes that connected Venice with Northern Europe and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The first step of the evaluation will take into account the qualifications, the academic and professional career and the publications of the candidate. Those who will pass the first step of the evaluation will have access to the interview. The interviews will take place on January 24, 25 and 26, 2022 (at the University of Padua or via Zoom).
